HOW THE BOOK CAME TO LIFE

Bite began one evening at bedtime. Evie, my four-year-old daughter, asked me to read her a story - something new, not from the dozens of books we already owned. And so, Bite and the naughty crocodiles were born, on the spot, created by just Evie and me.

Evie helped refine and correct the tale as we went along. Her four years worth of expertise in how a child's story should read eclipsed four decades worth of my own. And rightly so. The best storytellers are always children!

Bite and his vivid underwater playground lived on, past that evening. That determined and unusual shark swam around in my mind for weeks and wouldn't go away. What you now hold in your hands is where those imaginary adventures led me to.

BITE AND THE MAGICAL DIDGERIDOO is my first published book. Its creation has taught me that when you dare to fall into imagination, anything is possible.

I hope this adventure brings you as much enjoyment and inspiration as it has for Evie and myself.

Below is a stage-by-stage breakdown of how the story appeared on the page.

STAGE ONE

After Monika read the whole book and talked with Nigel about how he imagined it to look like, she made a rough sketch of every page.

Keeping the drawings loose helps her to focus on the most important elements of this scene.

Can you tell what this scene is telling us about Bite?

STAGE TWO

When Nigel approved the black and white sketches, Monika designed the colours.

It’s very important at the beginning to focus on big shapes and be loose. It helps to quickly change things if something needs to be red instead of blue.

STAGE THREE

Monika begins to carefully draw all the elements now. She starts with simple shapes and colours, and then draws a few lines to separate the flat shapes.

Without a single line on Bite you could hardly tell where his chin ends and where his proud chest starts.

STAGE FOURFinally, Monika adds shadow and light to everything! The mer-King and Queen’s tails sparkle in the light, and Bite proudly protects Underwatervania’s castle, while a school of fish swim among the bubbles.

STAGE FOUR

Finally, Monika adds shadow and light to everything!

The mer-King and Queen’s tails sparkle in the light, and Bite proudly protects Underwatervania’s castle, while a school of fish swim among the bubbles.
